Yesterday I went to the Farmers Market with my husband, Donny, the first time we\u2019ve gone
together this year. We bought parsley, green onions, and tomatoes, the makings for tabouli.
Back at home, I stood at the sink for an hour or two getting it ready\u2014washing all the parsley
and trimming the green onions. Tomorrow he\u2019ll put it all together for the Perron family picnic
I\u2019ll be going to.<\/p>
This didn\u2019t fall in the category of \u201cdoing.\u201d It might have last month and might tomorrow.
But yesterday I just emptied the greens into the sink, filled it with water and began.
When I use the word \u201cdoing,\u201d I\u2019m almost invariably speaking of something I\u2019m \u201ctrying\u201d to
get done. \u201cI\u2019ve got to do that.\u201d That\u2019s about right, I think. How many times have I told myself
I\u2019ve got to do one thing or another? It\u2019s a subtle thing, hard to realize. You don\u2019t see it until you
see it.<\/p>
When I\u2019m not trying, there\u2019s no \u2018thought\u2019 of doing. An action commences spontaneously. I
realize, then, that it\u2019s the way of my writings and dialogues, and with a sort of wonder and
surprise, that this way has been joining me in \u201cregular life\u201d a lot more than usual lately. \u201cI\u201d am
being spontaneous.
Did you know that spontaneous comes from the Latin word sponte \u2013 or free will? I didn\u2019t.
